It’s 12:30 in the morning, and you just need to go out. Your stomach starts to grumble and while it doesn’t make sense – you know you can eat, you want food. The normal list of late night chain fast food starts running through your head, the same old same old. Suddenly it strikes you that there’s a place that’s not only local and open late, but it’s the home of some pretty dang good pizza.
Empire Slice House opened in 2013 and has become a strong player in boosting the Plaza District community. Strategically located next to shopping, dessert shop, and live entertainment, Empire Slice House acts as a central hub as a drop in place to get a quick bite to eat and pairs well with whatever is on your docket for the evening.
Spot the pink elephant, note the gated open patio space and take a walk inside. You’ll find a slightly cramped entrance space but a whole lot of grunge to make up for it. A collaged wall and a well decorated bar fill up the central dining space (take note of the Christopher Walken walk-in). The recent expansion of the covered patio has greatly reduced wait times and allows space for larger parties to feel accommodated on busy nights.
For the pizza itself, know that a large truly means a large! If you have at least four hungry, can agree on a topping, feel free to order a whole pie – otherwise go for a by the slice option. Competitively priced, the by the slice options change by day (check online for the daily list) and usually has four specialty options along with the classic cheese and pepperoni. We highly recommend the Foghorn Leghorn or the Notorious P.I.G – don’t forget “dat pink sauce” for dipping. If you’re feeling extra hungry, make sure to grab a round of Garlic Knots before you dig in to the pie itself. Either way, make sure you’re ready to carb up. “Live free. Pie Hard!”
ELAL food for thought: parking can get competitive in the Plaza District, don’t be afraid to walk. Wait times can be high, try sitting at the bar or taking a walk down to the to-go / standing room shop, Easy E Slice Shop – a few doors down.
